    Macbook: New Power Adapter

My almost-5-yo Macbook needs power adapter to be replaced this morning.

This happens because I pushed a table to keep the adaptor stick to the power outlet on the wall when I was working at the hospital 2 days ago.

Luckily the apple store have the stock ready

It’s charging and I’m ready to work 🙂

Phew. The macbook has gone through many things during the gradschool. What a long journey.

    Upgrading Macbook HDD

Ok. This is how I upgraded Macbook 120GB internal harddisk to 320 GB.

First, connect the new harddisk using enclosure with USB port:

And then erase the new harddisk using Disk Utility so it will be recognised by Mac OS, and then clone the disk using SuperDuper.

It took several hours, and then start unscrewing:

After the L-shaped metal cover had been removed, then a white flap will come into view, and pull it to get the harddisk out:

This is the full view of the original Macbook internal harddisk enclosure:

And I found out that I did not have the screwdriver for the screws:

So I bought new set of screwdriver, yay:

    And unscrewing the old harddisk:

Unscrewing the new one from the enclosure:

    To get this:

And then swap the harddisks, do the screwing, reverse the process and yay! It’s now booting!

    And works! 🙂

The tutorial for alumunium macbook version is here.

[Thx for Bobby for the advice and quick tutorial 😉 He’s available on Twitter too 🙂 ]

    Macbook is back :)

After almost 3 weeks, here’s my macbook with new motherboard 🙂
I’m so happy! I’m like a fish swimming in the sea, after being put in a bucket 🙂

Here’s the list of things I miss the most from Mac :

    1. Finder. Mac OS file manager. It allows you to color certain directories to make it easier to find/categorize. It also have a strong searching algorithm, so I can always find every file I need without having to remember in which directory I put it. I can also view each files easily by pressing space bar, so I can see through inside the docs, scrolling each page of it without having to open the application. Viewing with spacebar also works for video, it can play in fullscreen. Right away without loading anything.
    2. Widgets. By pressing F12 a dictionary, address book, or apps being added will pop at the screen right away. I always use the dictionary and the thesaurus all the time this way. Very fast and useful.
    3. Growl. It will notify you for many things: twitter updates, chat conversations, etc. It’s nice to read all the updates on some part of the screen while doing something else like writing or reading or browsing.
    4. The apps. I almost can’t work without Bibdesk for managing my bibliography collection, Lyx for writing papers and docs with excellent math typing, Stainless the multisession browser, and Adium an instant messaging application that allows multiple accounts. And so many apps, Apple always has something for everything 🙂
    5. The trackpad gestures. All swiping and scrolling is much easier with Mac. Mac is snappy, it responds quickly, no delay.
    6. The display quality. The typography. The appeareance. The design.
    7. The spaces and expose. Makes moving from one work or one window to another very fast.
    8. Time machine. Backing up files dan system and can restore from a chosen date.
    9. Hibernation. Mac wakes up from a hibernation state in a blink 🙂
    10. I will add more things, there are so many 🙂
And here is the list I will never do again to my Mac:
    1. I will not run virtual machine again and run hardware simulation again there 😀 It’s to heavy, apparently this cause overheating that at the end broke the motherboard.
    2. I will not use dual boot. I have tried Windows and Mac OS. Not useful and inconvenient. And not good for the harddisk. I lost my previous one because of this.
    3. Put a keyboard cover, or a plastic body cover. It will cause overheating.
That’s all for a while. I’m going to celebrate the night with the 3year old Mac, hopefully it will make it until I finish the grad school 🙂
the battery works fine now 🙂

Phd life takes several batteries’ life

Entering the fourth year of my grad school, apparently now I have to buy a new one, again, after replacing the first one a year ago.

    Here’s the screenshot from today:

The battery was dead yesterday, and unexpectedly be able to be charged again this morning at home, and suddenly went dead again later when I was working at the office. So much of battery’s adventure, I either need to buy a new mac or finish the school immediately, I’ve been too long being a phd student (nah. I like to be one so I will extend the time as far as possible. Let’s just get a new battery 😛 )

    Macbook hard drive noise

Using macbook extensively by running virtual machine for doing heavy processing on top of windows xp apparently leads to a problem: overheating that cause the hard drive to produce loud “krrrkkrrkrkrk” noise.

I googled and all I got is these links:

    1. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2354
    2. http://laptoppimp.com/laptop-review/apple-laptops/apple-fixes-macbook-hard-drive-noise/
    3. http://support.apple.com/downloads/Hard_Drive_Firmware_Update_2_0
    4. http://www.retrodata.co.uk/media/apple-seagate-flaw/

that still not explains why my hard drive is making such noise. Some of the discussions said that it probably because of dust, or overheat situation, and some relate this problem with Seagate harddisk.

Mine is Fujitsu, and I have no clue if the details below would help to clarify this problem.

    So anybody know about this?

[btw i have back up-ed the data just in case the hd will be broken but hopefully not 😦 ]

I suspect it has something to do with the heat

what to do? replace the hd? or stop doing heavy processing?

Is removing your macbook’s battery will extend it’s life?

Don’t think so. It might risk the whole system.

But the most interesting tip to save battery is by inverting screen by pressing ctrl+option+command+8, and see how does your screen look like 🙂 [printscreen cannot capture this, that’s why i could’t show you]

    Macbook battery: not charging mystery

I have just bought a new battery to replace the old one which suddenly dead and refuse to be charged again after I complete discharged it for several days. Maybe overdischarging was the cause.

But the new battery has been acting weirdly, it cannot be charged after being completely discharged. There are many discussions over the internet reporting that this problem is related to Snow Leopard. Read more here:

it seems that it takes a while to charge the battery after a full discharge. after 15-20″ it starts charging.

now the same battery is dead. after a whole night being plugged to the power, the battery still not charging.
